<![CDATA[Cultural Encounters: Friday Nights at the de Young Presents the Jumping Buddha Ensemble, <i>Uncle Toisan,</i> and the de Young Poetry Series]]>
On Friday nights the entire museum is open until 8:45 p.m. Friday Nights at the de Young offers a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, and lectures. The cafe is open with a special Friday Nights dinner menu, and a no-host cocktail bar is serving drinks. There are art-making activities for everyone.

Cafe Terrace Party Tent

Live music by the Jumping Buddha Ensemble.
The name Jumping Buddha is derived from fo tiao qiang, a common delicacy whose name translates to "the Buddha jumps over the fence." The ensemble was formed in 1997 by a group of outstanding professional musicians specializing in the traditional music of China. The Jumping Buddha Ensemble performs Western music adapted to traditional Chinese musical instruments.

Hands on Art-making for Everyone.
“Art diva” Kim Erickson will lead art-making activities, focusing on pieces in Asian/American/Modern Art. Tonight’s focus is on collage, inspired by Ralph Iwamoto’s Eastern Twilight.

de Young Poetry Series: Linh Dinh and Wang Ping.
The leading Vietnamese-American poet of his generation, Linh Dinh is the author of the poetry collections All Around What Empties Out, American Tatts, Borderless Bodies, and Jam Alerts. He has also published two short story collections and a novel, Love Like Hate, is forthcoming. Wang Ping’s poetry collections include Of Flesh & Spirit and The Magic Whip. She has also published a novel, Foreign Devil, and a book of short stories, The Last Communist Virgin. Tickets required; see below.

Uncle Toisan, a History Alive! performance by Charlie Chin,
co-sponsored by the Chinese Historical Society. Uncle Toisan examines the challenging experiences of Chinese immigrants to the United States through the story of Uncle Toisan, who plays the Chinese erhu on the street in Chinatown to supplement his retirement in a small apartment he shares with his nephew’s family, who recently immigrated from China. A group of students on a walking tour stop to talk to Uncle Toisan and inspire him to share his story.
